The visual nature of DEM science lends itself to communication and can uniquely engage the public through media and exhibition. Indeed as part of my study I successfully communicated my research through scientific illustration and a major exhibition at the renowned Nature in Art Museum in Gloucestershire, UK. The artworks I created, were layered 3D illuminated paintings of the drops, capturing the 3Dnature of the patterns when viewed directly through the microscope, complemented by large scale photomicrographs on aluminium. The artworks engaged the viewers whilst detailed information displays directly communicated the science behind them. This was the first time that DEM and patterning in ice cores had been viewed by the public and it succeeded in raising great interest, awareness and the realisation that there are still new and intriguing things to discover about water.r.

Some Background information

The eight illuminated paintings in Gallery 1 are of melt water drops from eight samples of Antarctic ice cores in date order from 2 yrs old - 120,000 yrs old

 Ice Core Data indicating  climate change warming temperatures, was depicted in a Perspex painted ice core.

The Climate Clock depicted a globe on one side and 'Prof. Hawkins 'Show Your Stripes' data colours on the other side. Through the middle of the piece, a clock indicates how close to midnight we are, or how close we are to catastrophic temperature effects worldwide.
